Study Permits

Overview

Study Permit is for a foreign national who wish to study at an educational institution in Canada. You may study in Canada without a study permit if the duration of course or program of studies is six months or less and will be completed within the period authorized for your stay in Canada. For every minor child in Canada, other than a child of a temporary resident not authorized to work or study, is not required to obtain a study permit to study at the pre-school, primary or secondary level.

Eligibility to Apply

You must

  • provide proof of acceptance into an approved educational institution in Canada
  • provide evidence of sufficient funds to pay for tuition fees and living expenses in Canada
  • complete a medical examination
  • provide proof of no criminal record
  • demonstrate the intention to return home upon the completion of studies

    Post-Graduation Work Permit Program

    You may work in Canada after you graduate from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience. You may get skilled work experience by applying for the Post-Graduation Work Permit after graduation. Work permits may be valid for up to three years with no restrictions on the type of work you can do or where.

    According to the Canadian National Occupational Classification (NOC), skilled work experience means:

  • Skill Type 0 (managerial occupations) or
  • Skill Level A (professional occupations) or
  • Skill Level B (technical occupations and skilled trades)
  • If you do not meet the minimum work experience requirements, your application for permanent residence under the Canadian Experience Class will be refused.
